Juices and Smoothies - Load up on Vegetables!

Goldbush Vegetable Smoothies

Read on to find out how to make a delicious smoothie full of all the essential nutrients - it also happens to be delicious!

But first a quick and easy juice using the fantastic carrots from Goldbush Micro Farm:
Carrot Juice
750g of carrots makes 300mL juice, enough for 2 people, (do this daily for 10 days every 3 months for an ultimate dose of vitamin A, amazing for your health). 


We used a Breville juicer, simple design, seems to do a good job, the left-over fibrous material is very dry!

Carrot juice is very sweet, it's easy to drink that's for sure!

Next we tried a smoothie using:

Spinach, carrot, mint, parsley, half a cucumber, kiwifruit, ginger and lemon.

Essential Nutrient Smoothies

Here's the basic recipe I like to follow for a great smoothie. Green smoothies can take getting used to as they aren't super sweet like smoothies with lots of fruit. If you aren't used to drinking smoothies, use enough fruit to enjoy your smoothie (you're far more likely to make them again if you do!) then slowly reduce the amount you use and make sure to add some of the extras to adjust the flavour of your smoothie, this way your tongue appreciates it as much as your stomach!

1. Ice/water
2. Protein powder or egg (if you use this added protein you'll likely be full for longer, can be left out)
3. Pumpkin/sunflower/sesame seeds - handful of each (if you have pre-ground these to speed up your smoothie making, it will be 1/4 cup).
4. Spinach (handful)
5. Lemon (1/2 lemon, flesh only)
6. Apple cider vinegar (1 tablespoon)
7. Frozen fruit (handful or two)
8. Optional: Kelp powder, Oats (handful), Kiwifruit (x1), Flaxseed oil or Olive oil or Coconut oil, Avocado, Ginger
Option 1: Courgette (half), Peanut butter (1 Tbsp) Option 2: Banana (half), Parsley
Mix up the veges and greens and fruits to make a variety of flavours, any time you find your smoothie is a bit too "green" or "earthy" tasting try adding more ice/water and a half a banana, this usually saves it.


Today's Smoothie Ingredients

Spinach (70g), 1 kiwifruit, 1 carrot (2 would have been better), flesh of half a lemon, knob of ginger, half a cucumber, 3 springs of parsley and mint, ice.

Add enough ice and water to get the consistency you like, I enjoyed mine, Mum added carrot juice to hers to sweeten it.
